A trip to Chile involved about 5600 km, or 3500 miles, of driving, mostly along ruta 5, the main artery of the country, stretching from the Peruvian border all the way south to the island of Chiloé. I did not drive it all, I did not have the time for it. One section I particularly loved is this scenic pre-desert area by the town of Los Vilos, 300 km north of the capital, Santiago
